Bentonite is a claystone with montmorillonite as its primary mineral component, and it is a layered hydrous aluminosilicate mineral containing trace amounts of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. Featuring stable chemical composition and unique inherent properties – including swelling, cohesiveness, adsorptivity, catalysis, thixotropy, suspension and cation exchange capacity – bentonite is widely used in building materials, chemical engineering, metallurgy, environmental protection and other sectors. With bentonite as the raw material, more than a hundred derivative products have been developed, earning it the reputation of the "Universal Clay" in the industry.

Recently, the 200,000 TPY bentonite grinding production line engineered and constructed by SBM has been successfully installed and commissioned! The client is a large local listed enterprise and also a long-term valued customer of our company for many years.
This project featured high specifications and stringent requirements. After multiple rounds of comparison, screening and technical communication, the process design by SBM finally won the client’s recognition for its high technological content, superior cost performance and eco-friendly features.

The entire grinding production line for this project was designed by SBM, with the core equipment being the LM Series Vertical Mill. Boasting a scientific and rational design, compact layout as well as intelligent and eco-friendly properties, the whole production line truly enables the client to reap economic benefits from the high-efficiency and energy-saving new equipment and technologies.

Bentonite grinding is a critical process in steel plant pellet production, where the efficiency and quality of grinding directly impact production costs and pellet quality.
As the core equipment for bentonite grinding, SBM LM Series Vertical Mill integrates crushing, grinding, drying, classification, and conveying in one unit. It ensures the continuity and stability of bentonite powder production while boosting overall grinding efficiency.
Bentonite Grinding Process

Bentonite is mainly classified into sodium-based bentonite and calcium-based bentonite. Taking sodium-based bentonite as an example, the dry processing method is generally adopted for bentonite raw ore with high quality.
In this process, the bentonite raw ore is first crushed, and the crushed materials with a particle size of less than 20 mm are sent to the dryer system for drying. The dried materials are then stored in a buffer silo, and subsequently conveyed to the vertical mill via a belt conveyor for processing into products with a fineness of 100–325 mesh. Finally, the finished products are transported to the finished product silo for storage through screw conveyors and bucket elevators.

Fitted with an automatic control system, it enables free switching between remote and local control, featuring easy operation and labor savings. An automatic lubrication system is also equipped to support 24/7 non-stop production.

It can handle feed materials with a maximum moisture content of 15%. By adjusting the hot air temperature, it adapts to materials with different humidity levels, realizing simultaneous drying and grinding.
